The Rocket IIISo...the Rocket III is premiering this summer. Propaganda from the Triumph factory would have you believe that this motorcycle is the embodiment of motorcycle perfection. Its styling is certainly bold, and its horsepower claims are even bolder. I like it. I have a deposit on one-black, of course, but I have my own opinions on the execution of this magnificent machine. It could be argued that this is Triumph's first true cruiser. Sure, the Speedmaster could be considered, but realistically, the Speedmaster is a derivative of the standard motorcycle Triumph is most famous for-the "sport-cruiser." The Rocket III seems to fit into the category of "power cruiser." Motorcycles like the HD V-Rod, the Honda Valkyrie, the Yamaha V-Max, historically have had a difficult time establishing an identity that gives them the respect they are due. Each of the motorcycles listed has some engineering edge over the next bike, but stylistically, they have had a harder time finding an audience. Why? It could be because people are intimidated by their size or horsepower, but it most likely has to do with the fact that these motorcycles lie just outside the mainstream in their design. The Rocket III has more horsepower than you will know what to do with-more than any other production motorcycle has ever had. The rear tire is a 240-that is 10 inches wide! The front fork is inverted. This is a serious performance motorcycle. The dilemma will be what identity to create for the Rocket III. Current marketing materials convey a mixed and somewhat confusing identity; a mix of drag bike, sport-cruiser and full-dresser. I have seen photos of this bike dressed up with accessories mixing all three elements into one non-committal motorcycle deserving of a better career launch. Be on the lookout-this motorcycle will be hot! In the coming months you will begin to see custom Rockets that will amaze you. Rest assured, British Chopper will set the standard. |
